What Is Private Duty Nursing?
Private Duty Nursing is skilled nursing care provided by a licensed nurse (RN or LPN) for individuals who require continuous or intermittent medical support that cannot be safely managed by non-medical caregivers alone.
This service is typically authorized through Medicaid or other medical funding sources and is based on medical necessity.

- Skilled nursing assessments and monitoring
- Medication administration and management
- Tube feeding (enteral nutrition) support
- Tracheostomy care and suctioning
- Coordination with physicians and care teams
- Ventilator care (if applicable and authorized)

All services are provided in accordance with a physician’s orders and nursing care plans.
Who Can Receive Private Duty Nursing?
Have complex medical needs requiring skilled nursing care
Are enrolled in Medicaid (Health First Colorado)
May be children or adults with chronic or high-acuity conditions
Require ongoing nursing care to remain safely at home
Eligibility is determined through medical assessment and authorization by Medicaid or a managed care/waiver program when applicable.

Case Management & Care Coordination
Case managers and healthcare coordinators help determine eligibility, authorize services, and ensure proper service delivery.
Physician Orders
Private Duty Nursing must be supported by physician orders outlining medical needs and required skilled interventions.
Home Health & Medical Support Services
Individuals receiving PDN may also access:
